Final Front Cover & Contents Page

These are the final drafts of Front Cover & Contents Page.

Choosing My Final CU Image

Here is the final Medium CU Image of Jordan Fisher that I have chosen to use. I plan to crop the image and stick to my hand drawn design shown on earlier posts. I caught this shot of Jordan as we were stood talking, allowing him to look casual and relaxed, just as the college atmosphere I think that he portrays this well in the image and the side strap bag is very everyday college life.

I believe that the image represents students at the college very well, and what he is wearing fits in with the instituion.

Potential CU Images for Cover

Here are some CU / Medium CU Images that I have taken on my Panasonic Lumix. The portrate shots were unsuitable, and some of the shots were blury or not as I had hoped. Some of these images will be used within my Contents Page.

Above is a draft drawn on Paint showing the layout of my contents page. The green, pink and purple outlines represent images. The text positioning is shown as and will be organised in columns as shown. I believe this layout it simple and easy to follow.

3D Barcode options

Above are some newer style barcodes, reconiseable and fuctional in size. I have chosen to use this style of barcode on my final College Magazine.

2D Barcode options

The sizes of 2D Barcodes tend to be all the same. These are the old style barcodes and yet are still being used fequently with magazines. Something to take into consideration is if the barcode is of appropriate size for the person selling the item to scan and how identifiable it is. May people would not be familiar with these types of barcodes. I have therefore chosen to include some more barcodes which seem to be a lot more functional and suitable.

Potential Sell Lines

I also created another spider diagram to write all of my possible Sell Lines on. This is a clear way of deciding which ones are most suitable and why. My favorite is
"The Real College Experience."

Masthead Title Ideas

Here is a spider diagram of Potential Masthead Titles. I am trying to aim for something short, to the point and different. College Life is simple and to the point. When considering my target audience, the title has to suit everybody within a college. Therefore using something more general such as College Life, rather than College Freshers covers my entire target audience.

Hand Drawn Layout Draft

This is a hand drawn draft of the possible layout to my College Magazine. I have aimed to include:

  • Masthead
  • Barcode
  • Main Feature Headline
  • Subtitle
  • Smaller Features
  • CU to Medium Cu Image

. When I have scanned in the picture draft I have realised that the outline image of a person would make the picture too close up, therefore not matching the brief requirements. I have made notes to ensure that I bear this in mind when taking my shots. I will be using my Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ4 to do so and have planned to include all photos, even the ones I decide not to use and why.

Key Features of a College Magazine

Each of these features will be included in my preliminary task. I think this is a strong example of a good quality College Magazine. The main image in this case acts as the background, I am going to try and achieve this layout also. I like how the person has layered the 1st image of the park, the Masthead and then the 2nd picture of the Medium CU. This adds depth and shows the ability to use Photoshop.

The main image uses an Institution via a Stereo Type, a Young Pretty Girl aged 17-18, wearing College promotion top. This is a clear representation of what the consumer would expect a college girl to look like, showing that they have thought about the appearance of the girl and her clothing. The focal point of the picture is the girls facial expression, happy. This is to represent students at the college and their feelings about the college. This portrays an idea of how other college students perceive college life. The eye contact of the girl offers a connection with the audience, engaing our attention. The camera will have been position centrally, however the models position is slightly horizontal adding a qwerky look to the picture.

The photographer has clearly thought about still-shot realism. I can imagine this girl just casually walking through a park with her friends. Capturing such a real shot, of everyday activity connects with the audience. Allowing them to relate to her. Everything within the shot is real and natural. The background is a huge contrast between the shot of the model herself and yet I think they work to well together. The image is cropped as a half body shot from a cinema frame.

The college magazine represents good attitudes and beliefs of realism though appropriate image and text. This connects with ideology and how it is anchored by the main CU image.

The language they have chosen as subtitles and smaller features are written as questions, allowing the audience to connect with the cover and question themselves, this then makes the student want to read what is featured inside.

Preliminary Task Brief

Using DTP and a image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine. This must feature a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriatey laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate your grasp of DTP.

L.I.I.A.R

Language - Specific Media Terminology, Masthead title, Teaser, Subtitle, Smaller Feature. All language portrayed on the cover.

Institution - Organisation, something that produces media / media text.

Ideology - Represented by values, ideas and beliefs.

Audience- Consumers and Target Audience. How they will interpret the media and in what ways it would effect them.

Representation - Re-presenting society back to us. Values people represent such as stereo types. How things and portrayed.

Analyzing Example Cover & Contents Page

Below are the pictures of the East Riding College example provided for us. I have decided to analyze their appearance and effectiveness.

At a first glance, the front cover strikes me as dull. However the Mast Head is clear and easily read. The logo is destinctive and the cover does serve it's purpose. However I will aim to make my cover more colourful and eye catching. The image used in the front cover is unique however it features very sultry tones of colour and not vibrate colours, possibly making the cover less attractive to some people.

The contents page is clearly labeled with page numbers, and features some images of what will be metioned within the magazine. This is slightly more colourful and yet still achieves a simple layout. There is room for improvement, for example the student could have feathers the edges of the images instead of adding a border. Or perhaps used one image as the main background. I think the text is clear and of appropriate size, however when comparing this page to the cover I think that the student should maybe have tried to use the same font for titles throughout. I think they also should have included some green onto the cover because the green is not shown on all pages as a colour scheme.
